Twist - a Symbolic Building in Stockholm
Twist is the winning proposal in a competition for a symbolic building in the new city district of Hagastaden in Stockholm.
The building is to serve as a meeting place for the people who come to the area to live, work, conduct research, study or simply visit. It houses a restaurant, a café and a rooftop terrace, and will be located at the intersection of the old Vasastaden, the new Hagastaden and the Nya Karolinska hospital. The two-storey building hoovers on top of an existing garage ramp, which required an innovative construction solution.
The name, Twist, reflects the building’s form but also the programme, which combines and intersperses work with pleasure, and individual activities with collective ones. The light, wooden construction gently twists from one floor to the next, and a multi-purpose staircase connects the lobby level with the upper floors and rooftop terrace. The large windows facilitate the interplay between the interior and the exterior. With activities throughout the evening and night, Twist will be a light in the dark after the neighbouring office buildings have been closed for the day.
