Twinhouse – Two Retreats in Dialogue with the Archipelago
Two separate houses form a coherent composition between forest, rock and sea. Through restrained architecture, a carefully curated material palette and meticulous attention to detail, Twinhouse creates a secluded retreat where nature, craftsmanship and artistic expression converge.
Twinhouse comprises a guest house and a sauna house, positioned apart within the landscape yet connected through similar proportions, volumes and materials. Together, they appear as related objects in the archipelago—distinct in character and function, but unmistakably part of the same composition.
Set at the top of a hill, the guest house is conceived as an abstract volume cantilevering over the terrain. Its exterior is clad in solid corten steel panels, which develop a rich, evolving patina and allow the building to enter into dialogue with the surrounding rock and vegetation.
Behind the robust outer shell lies a warm and meticulously crafted interior entirely lined in oak. An oversized herringbone pattern extends across both floor and ceiling, creating the sensation of entering a finely made wooden object rather than a conventional building. The bathrooms are finished in local sandstone with brass fittings. Large folding glass panels allow the entire façade to open towards the sea, dissolving the boundary between interior and landscape.
The sauna house is defined by an equally reduced and precise palette of materials. Its perforated corten steel skin filters daylight and creates shifting patterns of shadow throughout the day. Derived from photographs of waves in the surrounding archipelago, the pattern transforms the movement of water into an abstract architectural motif. The outer skin also provides privacy while allowing natural light to enter.
Inside, floors and walls are clad in Valser quartzite, complemented by aspen panelling and copper details. The result is a calm, sensory environment in which the tactile qualities of stone, timber and metal heighten the experience of heat, water and nature.
Twinhouse demonstrates how a private retreat can achieve a powerful identity through precision rather than excess—and how architecture can become an extension of both the landscape and the owner’s personal world.
