Kvarnstugan – a mixed-use block in the heart of Ursvik
Homes, culture and everyday life gathered around Ursvik’s new public square.
The Kvarnstugan block is centrally located in Ursvik in Sundbyberg, next to the district’s new public square where the planned light rail line will have a stop. The project forms an important hub in the neighbourhood and brings together several functions within a single urban block.
The development consists of several buildings connected through a shared ground floor. The programme includes a residential tower with rental apartments, a cultural centre with library and cultural activities, assisted living, and townhouses. Together they create a lively environment where people of different ages and life situations can meet naturally in everyday life.
The architecture of the block is defined by variation and distinct identities. A rich palette of materials – brick, timber, concrete and corten steel – creates diverse façades and a dynamic urban environment along the surrounding streets and square. The cultural centre features a hybrid structure in timber and concrete, combining sustainability with a warm architectural character.
Through its mix of housing, culture and public functions, Kvarnstugan becomes a natural meeting place and an important part of the emerging centre of Ursvik.
