Kungsbroskrapan In the heart of Södermalm, by Nytorget, a new residential building has taken shape in Malongen Park. The project demonstrates how the inner city can be carefully densified on a small triangular site, where new architecture is woven into the existing urban fabric. Around 23 rental apartments have been created in one of Stockholm’s most attractive locations.
The building is designed with a timeless architectural expression inspired by Södermalm’s historic buildings. The ambition was to create a house that feels natural in its surroundings – as if it had always been there. The façade is rendered, with the floors articulated in brick, giving the building a clear rhythm and an expression that relates to the surrounding historic blocks.
A restaurant on the ground floor contributes to the vibrant street life around Nytorget and strengthens the connection between the building and the public realm. Together with the new homes, it creates activity and life throughout much of the day.
Malongen shows how a small site in the dense inner city can be transformed into something new without losing the character of the place. A contemporary addition that nevertheless feels like a natural part of Södermalm’s cityscape.
